History

It's simply astounding to see what happens when compassionate volunteers work together to help their neighbors in need. Over and over again, I see how families become empowered, and communities are transformed.

-- Karen Olson, Founder & President, Family Promise

Family Promise Chicago North Shore, Inc. began operations in March 2010 as the only organization on the North Shore of Chicago that keeps the family together while providing emergency shelter, meals and other support to families in homeless situations. That year, 10 local congregations of different faith communities provided overnight accommodations and meals to five families. During the day, the Family Promise Day Center provided the families with a place where parents could look for work and housing and care for their young children. A van transported guests between the congregations and Day Center.

From those humble beginnings, Family Promise Chicago North Shore has grown to serve 15 families each year through a network of 29 congregations, multiple community partners, and a new, expanded Day Center. Hundreds of Chicago area volunteers who believe in the Family Promise mission support the North Shore organization with thousands of volunteer hours each year.

Founded as part of the national Family Promise organization, Family Promise Chicago North Shore operates independently.  A non-sectarian 501(c) nonprofit organization, Family Promise Chicago North Shore receives neither governance nor funding from the national organization, only benefiting from their training and guidance.
